CUI announces the 2014 Urban Leadership Award recipients

The Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) will present the 11th Annual Urban Leadership Awards: Inspiring the Urban Agenda on June 25, 2014 at the Berkeley Church in Toronto. This year they have introduced a new format, where award recipients participate in a panel moderated by Corporate Knights President Toby Heaps, to inspire the urban agenda for the year ahead.

These awards celebrate individuals making a profound impact on the quality of life in Canada’s urban regions. Past recipients include: Eberhard Zeidler, Anne Golden and the Hon. Bill Davis.

The Jane Jacobs Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual whose vision and passion for cities has had a profound impact on several aspects of urban health over many years, and was given to architect Jack Diamond of Diamond Schmitt Architects for his contribution to improving the built form and advocacy for cities and the future of the GTA.

Dr. Sheldon Levy, President and Vice-Chancellor of Ryerson University, won the David Crombie Award for his role in advancing the university as a city-builder through projects such as the redevelopment of Maple Leaf Gardens. This award recognizes an individual engaging community, government and private-sector partners to help regenerate and enhance the public realm in the Greater Golden Horseshoe.

The NextGEN Award recognizes an emerging leader whose work is helping develop a healthy urban community, and was given to developer Steve Kulakowsky of Core Urban Inc. for his commitment to downtown Hamilton’s economic development and to championing the cause of other young entrepreneurs.

And finally, the City Builder Award went to City of Guelph Mayor Karen Farbridge for her leadership in sustainability, community energy and the revitalization of downtown Guelph. This award recognizes a leader whose bold vision and ability to implement change represents true city building.
