Century Plaza Public Landmark Competition

The City of Saskatoon is seeking from artists, architects, landscape architects, designers and engineers “Expressions of Interest” to design, fabricate and install a landmark as an integral component of the River Landing Century Plaza in downtown Saskatoon. The closing date for the initial expression of interest is 3:00pm on July 20, 2005. The projected unveiling of the Century Plaza Public Landmark is scheduled for the summer/fall of 2006.

The final award of the commission will be $350,000.00. The payment schedule for the stage will be in four equal increments: at the award of the commission upon the signing of the service contract; at 50% completion of fabrication; at 100% completion of fabrication; and at completion of installation.

The Century Plaza will integrate the environment of the river’s edge with Saskatoon’s urban fabric, and will be enjoyed by both tourists and locals. It will function as a focal point and enhance the vista from the north along 2nd Avenue, and along the south from the Senator Sid Buckwold Bridge, the Victoria Bridge and the Broadway Bridge. The Century Plaza Landmark will also serve as the main gateway into the city’s riverbank parkway system. The Landmark should be designed to function during the daytime, evening and throughout the four seasons.

Three significant milestones will be reached over the next few years – the Provincial Centennial in 2005, the City of Saskatoon’s Centennial in 2006, and the University of Saskatchewan’s Centennial in 2007. The Century Plaza Landmark will celebrate this 100-year history and look forward to the next 100 years.

The theme “The Past 100 Years – The Next 100 Years” acknowledges the rich and diverse history of the site and envisions the future. In the amalgamation of old with the new, the design proposals can not only draw upon the many contextual and historic references embedded at Century Plaza, but may also use contemporary and emerging technologies, techniques and materials.

Individuals or teams of artists, architects, landscape architects, urban designers, graphic artists, and/or engineers are invited to respond.
