CB2 opens in historically significant landmark building in Toronto

After much anticipation, modern home furnishings brand CB2 has opened its first Canadian store on Saturday, January 21, 2012. Anchoring the corner of Queen and Bathurst Streets in Toronto’s hip and historic Queen West neighbourhood, the location will be the first brick-and-mortar location in the country. The store inhabits a historically significant building that dates back to 1876, Most recently, it was the home of the legendary Big Bop Concert Hall & Nightclub that was established in the early 1990s. The Big Bop was a pivotal part of the Toronto music scene for more than 20 years. The landmark venue closed in 2010 and underwent a significant renovation that sensitively retains much of its heritage, and has now transformed into the first Canadian location of modern furniture brand, CB2. CB2 recognizes the youthful energy and spirit that the Big Bop brought to the Queen West neighbourhood and promises to preserve that same vibe in remembrance of this beloved venue.

Known for its combination of high design and approachability, CB2 will offer Toronto design enthusiasts access to home furnishings that are as affordable as they are original. Opening with the new spring 2012 collection as well as the brand’s go-to staples, CB2 offers innovative and accessible design solutions for apartment, home and office. The new collection features brightly coloured accessories in green, yellow, pool blue and – Pantone’s 2012 colour of the year – Tangerine Tango. The collection also offers a great  selection of neutral pieces such as the Quarry Dining Table, Torino Desk, P7 coffee table and Slip C side table, all in light natural wood tones.

Founded in 2000, CB2 is headquartered in Chicago, and has stores in 11 metropolitan locations across the United States, in addition to the brand’s rapidly growing e-commerce and catalogue divisions. Expansion into the Canadian market was a natural next step for the dynamic and fast-growing brand.

“Toronto is a fantastic, international city with a sophisticated shopping, dining and design scene,” says Marta Calle, Director of CB2. “We love the eclectic quality of the Queen West neighbourhood. The first time we visited the area, we knew it was the perfect place for a CB2 store.” In selecting the site, CB2 leadership was inspired by the energy, growth and eclectic spirit of the neighbourhood and the unique history of The Big Bop. The space will feature the modern yet warm aesthetic that defines the CB2 look and brand. In keeping with the historic neighbourhood and building, the exterior façade was restored to the original masonry and updated with a two-storey glass wall. The interior showcases the original exposed stonework, as well as reclaimed wood flooring and etched industrial doors.

To join in on the store opening fun, consumers who visit CB2 January 21st through February 29th will receive a promotional card for a chance to win $10 off a purchase of $50 or more, or the daily grand prize of a $500 shop card.
