For 55 years, the magazine’s national awards have recognized design excellence in future projects. This is also the 5th year of our Photo Awards of Excellence, marking the best recent photographs of Canadian buildings. This year’s deadline for submissions to both programs is Thursday, September 15, 2022.
Projects entered into the Awards of Excellence must be either (a) in the design stage, (b) scheduled for construction, or (c) under construction but not substantially complete by September 12, 2022. All projects must be commissioned by a client with the intention to build the submitted proposal. All building types and concisely presented urban design schemes are eligible.
Awards are given for architectural design excellence. Jurors will consider the following criteria:
- Physical organization and form, including attention to composition and detail;
- Response to program, site, geographic, social and/or urban context;
- Innovation in concept, process, materials, building systems and/or implementation;
- Demonstration of exemplary environmental performance, including supporting metrics where available;
- Use of design to advance spatial and social justice, and/or to support a vision of reconciliation, equity and inclusion.
The Awards of Excellence are open to all architects registered in Canada, as well as to Canadian architectural graduates. The buildings entered may be designed for a site in Canada or abroad. Foreign architects are permitted to submit if they have partnered with a Canadian-registered architect for the submitted work.
For projects that have developed an energy performance model, it is now mandatory that the resulting report be submitted as a separate document. If the project has not developed an energy model, energy performance metrics are not required.
This year’s competition also includes the Canadian Architect Photo Awards of Excellence. The awards recognize the best images of Canadian buildings, taken in the past two years. The Photo Awards are open to professional and non-professional photographers.
