Canada Goes Wild! (November 16, 2004)

The Design Exchange has been selected to curate a showcase of Canadian designers for the Canadian Pavilion at the 2005 World’s Fair in Aichi, Japan. The theme of the World’s Fair is Nature’s Wisdom. Complementing this theme, the Design Exchange’s showcase will focus on Canadian designers whose work is Wild. This term can be taken literally to suggest designs that engage with or are inspired by Canada’s wilderness. It can also be interpreted stylistically, indicating designs that have an edgy and energetic flavour.

The aim of this showcase is to support and promote Canadian designers from all design disciplines whose innovative work will appeal to the Japanese market. Firms that have export-ready products or services or that have already made inroads into the Japanese market will be given special consideration. Selected firms will be promoted via a publication, a website, and at several events in Japan. Funding may be available to contribute to the cost of attending these events, to be held between March 30 and April 06, 2005.

The Design Exchange is currently developing a shortlist of Canadian designers and design firms for inclusion in this showcase. If you are an innovative designer or if you know of an innovative designer whose “wild” designs have the potential to make an impact in Japan, please send an e-mail to before November 19, 2004 making a case for inclusion. Please include images, a brief product description, company background and contact information. Regrettably, the number of participants is limited.

Canada Goes Wild! is made possible through the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Ministry of Canadian Heritage.
