The Ville de Montréal’s Bureau du design has issued a call for proposals from Montreal designer-producers and distributors for distinctive souvenir gift items, to be selected for inclusion in the third edition of the CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL catalogue, which will be published in May 2014. The catalogue promotes creations by Montreal-based designers and facilitates purchases of value-added corporate gifts by public- and private-sector institutional buyers.
The souvenir items are given to national and international guests on their visits to Montreal, or distributed during trade missions and similar trips abroad. These mementoes are emblematic of Montreal, evoking the city in visitors’ minds. They leave a representative and recognizable imprint of the city and its identity. They are fun, original high-quality objects worthy of a City of Design.
Through this initiative, several local creators enjoy outstanding visibility with Montreal cultural institutions, universities and corporations as well as representatives of international organizations. In May 2013, more than 100 gift items by 27 designer-producers were showcased at a pop-up store set up during the C2-MTL international convention, the Montreal International Design Show (SIDIM) and the Haut+Fort design fair.
Gift items must be well made, lightweight, easy to carry in a suitcase, and compliant with customs regulations. They should preferably be unisex, and may include decorative or utilitarian items as well as fashion accessories.
The committee comprises the following members: Azamit, Art Director, Stylist and Researcher, and Founder of [email protected]; Annie Bourassa, Senior Marketing and Communications Advisor, Palais des congrès de Montréal; Geneviève Cyr, Cofounder, Jamais assez boutique; André Desrosiers, Industrial Designer, Professor, École de design, UQAM; and Lynn Gagnon, Director of Hospitality and Protocol, Ville de Montréal.
The call for proposals is open to any designer-producer or distributor that meets the following conditions: is the creator of the gift item(s) being submitted or, in the case of a distributor, obtains the agreement of the creator(s) before submitting a proposal; has, at the time the proposal is submitted, a network providing for the production and distribution of the item(s) submitted, whether existing or newly designed; agrees to have the gift items submitted appear in a publication and to have them available for order by the buyers concerned; operates primarily from a head office located in Montreal at the time the proposal is submitted.
