Call for presenters for Banff Session 2014: Beyond Boundaries

Every two years, the Alberta Association of Architects holds a conference in the beautiful Rocky Mountains in Banff appropriately titled Banff Session. The conference provides an opportunity for those involved in the practice of architecture and interior design to discuss their work, ideas, beliefs and attitudes in an arena of open dialogue, in a unique context unencumbered by the everyday pressures and activities of the workplace.

The Banff Session has historically been attended by a full house of approximately 450 architects, interior designers, academics, and students from all parts of Canada and the United States. This year, the event takes place on Friday and Saturday, May 2-3, 2014 at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Presentations will be delivered by both keynote speakers and professional development speakers.

The theme for Banff Session 2014 is Beyond Boundaries. The art of architecture and interior design has inspired us throughout history. Through the use of material, scale, proportion and light, artists created spaces that are meaningful to all who work, play and live in them. With modern advances in technology, improved tools for design, and increasing limits to material properties, former boundaries that used to constrain architectural possibility are dissolving rapidly.

Sub-themes include: Evoking Memories of Influential Theories and Movements; Imagining the Future of Urban Spaces; Creating a Sustainable Vision; Transcending Social Boundaries; Exploring the Essence of Materials; and Articulating the Possibilities.

The Alberta Association of Architects has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for professional development speakers; the submission deadline is November 1, 2013. Electronic submissions are preferred, and must be sent to [email protected].

Presenters are asked to be mindful of the following general guidelines as they relate to professional development sessions: the sessions must be educational in nature with clearly stated learning objectives; the sessions must be relevant to the practice of architecture and interior design; the sessions should tie into the event theme of Beyond Boundaries; the material presented should be current and focused on subject areas of interest to our members; and the sessions should not be sales-oriented or seen as endorsing a particular product.
