Call for Members – Toronto Design Review Panel Pilot Project
February 24, 2007 is the deadline to submit your CV to the newly established Design Review Panel, for which the City of Toronto is currently recruiting members.
High quality design of the public realm is the hallmark of a great city. Cities in Canada, across North America and Europe use Design Review Panels successfully in the city building process to achieve this objective.
In Toronto, design excellence will play a key role in meeting the challenges of the intensifying city and creating a legacy for the future. The Design Review Panel, approved by City Council in June 2006, will establish an important voice for design and a leadership role for design professions within the development approvals process.
In its advisory role the panel will provide objective, professional advice to City Planning staff about new urban design policy and applications for proposed public and private development. As their deliberations will be viewed by the public, and minutes will become public documents, they will also play a significant role in engendering an informed, public debate about the design of our City.
The panel will be composed of twelve members including a chair. The mix of design professionals will include six architects, three landscape architects, two urban designers (architects, landscape architects or planners with an expertise in urban design) and one engineer with sustainability expertise.
All panel members must be registered members in good standing of their respective professional associations; Ontario Association of Architects, Ontario Association of Landscape Architects and/or the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects, Ontario Professional Planners Institute and the Professional Engineers of Ontario or Ontario Society of Professional Engineers.
A range of practitioners with expertise in the following is encouraged:
*urban design, architecture, landscape architecture and sustainability
*range of scales, and project types, including large-scale development
City Council has approved a two-year Pilot Project during which significant public and private projects will be reviewed in six pilot areas across the city. The panel is scheduled to begin in May 2007 and will meet approximately every 3 to 4 weeks depending on the number of applications. Members will serve for a two-year term.
Conflict of Interest
Panel members will not be excluded from bidding on and carrying out work on projects which are reviewed by the Panel. In such circumstances, panel members will be required to declare a conflict and not participate in the review.
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter and CV by February 24, 2007 to their professional association by emailing:
