Toronto-based Brook McIlroy have recently been honoured with three awards for three separate projects.
Eglintonconnects, their Eglinton Crosstown Planning Study, was recognized by the Institute of Transportation Engineers for Toronto Section Project of the Year 2013. The project endeavours to establish place-making on Eglinton Avenue alongside the new Crosstown LRT to accommodate a growing Toronto. The project team is comprised of the City of Toronto and the Crosstown Collaborative (Brook McIlroy/planningAlliance/HDR/Antoine Grumbach/Public Work/ERA/Swerhun/Public Workshop/NBLC).
The firm also won the Best Small-Scale Project by the Canadian Urban Institute 2013 Brownfields Awards Program, honouring the Baggage Building Arts Centre in Thunder Bay, Ontario, a renovation and expansion of a century-old building to create a public destination at Prince Arthur’s Landing.
And lastly, an Award of Merit in Community Planning was given to Brook McIlroy at the Saskatchewan Premier’s Design Awards, recognizing the University of Saskatchewan College Quarter Master Plan. The proposed scheme provides a strategy for incremental development of the University of Saskatchewan’s College Quarter lands over the coming years, including the provision of between 2,500 and 3,000 new residence beds. In contrast to the traditional university campus model, which congregates all university facilities into one campus area, College Quarter seeks to integrate university uses with a dynamic range of public, commercial, residential and recreational uses to be built in partnership with the private and public sectors. The College Quarter Master Plan framework establishes a street and block pattern; a series of linked dynamic public spaces; building massing; an open space system; tree-lined pedestrian and bicycle circulation networks; and design standards that will result in a visionary, sustainable campus environment unrivalled in Canada.
