Winners of 2004 National Post Design Exchange Awards announced. Awards were presented to designers in various disciplines including architecture, engineering, fashion, industrial design, interior design, landscape design, urban design, new media and visual communications. The Gold winners are as follows: Busby Perkins + Will for the White Rock Operations Centre in the Architecture-Commercial category; Le consortium Daoust Lestage Inc.-Provencher Roy Associs for Quartier international de Montral in the Urban Design category; Le consortium Daoust Lestage Inc.-Provencher Roy Associs for Place Jean-Paul Riopelle in the Landscape Architecture category; and Marshall Cummings & Associates for the Bell Wireless Technology Innovation Centre in the Interior Design-Commercial category.

Recipients of the 2004 Aga Khan Award for Architecture announced. The Aga Khan Award for Architecture has a triennial prize fund of $500,000 US, the world’s largest architectural award. The seven projects selected by the 2004 Award Master Jury are: Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria, Egypt; Primary School in Gando, Burkina Faso; Sandbag Shelter Prototypes in various locations; Restoration of Al-Abbas Mosque in Asnaf, Yemen; Old City of Jerusalem Revitalisation Programme in Jerusalem; B2 House in Ayvaczk, Turkey; and Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malysia. Established in 1977, the Award recognizes examples of architectural excellence throughout the Islamic world in the fields of contemporary design, social housing, community improvement and development, restoration, reuse and area conservation, as well as landscape design and improvement of the environment.

Deadline for Urban Leadership Awards Nomination. Until February 1, the Canadian Urban Institute invites the public to nominate those individuals who have had a profound and lasting impact on the quality of life in their neighbourhood, and those who have contributed to the public realm through: City Renewal, City Soul, City Livability, City Initiatives, and City Youth.
