Art for Derek

Beloved writer and Toronto cultural figure Derek McCormack became seriously ill last fall with a very rare cancer of the appendix. Fortunately, it is treatable, but the treatment itself is extraordinarily arduous – an 18-hour surgery from which he will be recovering for at least six months. But which could, fingers and toes crossed, put the cancer in remission for a very long time. He will be in hospital for about a month afterward and then recovering with friends and family for several months after that. During this time, he will be unable to work at all, and there’s still the possibility of complications that could prolong his recovery even further. As Derek is a writer and bookseller, he doesn’t make or have a lot of money.

In order to help him along, and to cover his trip to New York (where he went for a second opinion at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center), his living expenses during his recovery, and possibly even a bit of a cushion for any unforeseeable complications, an online art sale has been created as well as a fundraising evening of music and performance at The Garrison in downtown Toronto on April 10, 2012. If you are able to support either event, it would be most appreciated.

Art for Derek is an art sale and not an auction. Works are sold on a first-come-first-served basis. Included are works by Micah Adams, David Altmejd, Will Alsop, Shary Boyle, Kim Dorland, Dave Dyment, Vincent Fecteau, Robert Fones, Geoffrey James, Linda Jones, Tom Koken, Micah Lexier + Derek McCormack, Ken Nicol, Paul P., Roula Partheniou, Paul+Wendy Projects (including works by Michael Dumontier and Neil Farber, Daniel Eatock, Micah Lexier), Ian Phillips, Jon Sasaki, Seth, Hugh Scott-Douglas, Derek Sullivan, Scott Treleaven, Flavio Trevisan, Joy Walker, Margaux Williamson and Laurel Woodcock.  Please visit www.artforderek for more information or to buy a work of art.
