The Design Council of Saskatchewan (DCS) recently held Design Week in Saskatoon, its biennial celebration of design. A variety of activities including free lectures and film presentations were held to promote public awareness and understanding of applied design. The week ended with the Mixer @ the Market – an opportunity to check out fresh, homegrown professional design at the Saskatoon Farmers’ Market with the announcement of the winners of the Premier’s Design Awards program. The winning projects are an eclectic and inspiring example of the great work being done throughout the province of Saskatchewan.
Winners are as follows:
In the Architecture category, the Premier’s Award of Excellence in Design recognized the Meadow Lake Courthouse by HDH Architects, while three Awards of Merit distinguished aodbt architecture + interior design’s Mistawasis Health Centre and the International Vaccine Centre in Mistawasis First Nation, and the White Stone Business Park in Saskatoon by SEPW Architecture Inc.
In the Landscape Architecture category, the Premier’s Award of Excellence in Design was given to the River Landing Riverfront project in Saskatoon by Crosby Hanna & Associates.
In the Interior Design category, the Premier’s Award of Excellence in Design went to Studio FIAT in Saskatoon by Stantec Architecture Ltd. Two Awards of Merit recognized the Ramada Hotel renovation in Regina by Stantec Architecture Ltd. and the Saboroso Brazilian Steakhouse in Saskatoon by HDH Architects.
In the Community Planning category, the Premier’s Award of Excellence in Design recognized Public Spaces, Activity and Urban Form Strategic Framework in Saskatoon by the City of Saskatoon/University of Saskatchewan/Sweeny Stirling Finlayson & Co Architects Inc./Stantec Architecture Ltd.
In the Collaborative Category, the Premier’s Award of Excellence in Design went to the River Landing Pedestrian Linkage in Saskatoon by Stantec Consulting Ltd./Stantec Architecture Ltd.
And lastly, in the Graphic Design category, the Premier’s Award of Excellence in Design was given to Ryan Schmidt of Sparrowhaus for the ScotDance Canada 2010 logo. Four Awards of Merit were given to: the “Sounds Like Architecture” Royal Architectural Institute of Canada 2010 Conference Identity by Christian Jensen Communications Design; Tap Communications signage by Tim Neal of Tap Communications; Ryan Schmidt of Sparrowhaus for his logos for Howie’s Barber Shop and the Woodridge Veterinary Clinic.
The Design Council of Saskatchewan is the collective voice of the six associations representing design professionals working in the disciplines of architecture, community planning, engineering, graphic design, interior design and landscape architecture.
