Larry Beasley, former Director of Planning for the City of Vancouver and Distinguished Practice Professor at the University of British Columbia, has been selected to receive the prestigious IIDA Leadership Award of Excellence in recognition of his role in the shaping of Vancouver’s urban landscape and aesthetic. The award presentation will take place at the second annual Vancouver Leaders’ Breakfast, to be held at the Vancouver Convention Centre from 8:00am to 10:00am on Thursday, February 9, 2012. Celebrating the recent unveiling of Pixar Studios’ new Vancouver facility, Pixar Art Director Jay Shuster will deliver the keynote address.
Larry Beasley’s 30 years of service has made him a global leader in the field of city planning and key figure in the development of Vancouver’s urban landscape. As a champion of New Urbanism, Mr. Beasley’s work has dramatically reshaped Vancouver’s inner city and contributed to the revitalization of several disadvantaged neighbourhoods.
Today, he advises the private sector and governments around the world through his work as Chair of the National Advisory Committee on Planning, Design and Realty in Canada, Chief Advisor on Urban Design for the City of Dallas in the United States, member of the International Economic Development Advisory Board of Rotterdam in The Netherlands, and Special Advisor on City Planning to the government of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
Jay Shuster is set to deliver the keynote address as Pixar celebrates the recent unveiling of their new facility in Vancouver, building on the city’s vibrant film industry. A member of the Pixar Animation team since 2002, Jay has drawn on a background in industrial design to create fun and fresh characters for films including Cars and Oscar winners WALL-E and Toy Story 3. As Art Director on Pixar’s critically acclaimed Cars 2, his creative leadership philosophy focused on staying fresh through a unique approach and process. Jay will reveal the Pixar process through his personal experiences on the four films he has contributed to over the past nine years.
