The Vancouver Art Gallery will present a full day of programming focused on Vancouver photography on October 20, 2007, the opening day of Roy Arden, the first major Canadian retrospective of work by the renowned Vancouver artist. Included in the days events will be a landmark panel discussion bringing together renowned Vancouver artists Roy Arden, Jeff Wall and Ian Wallace for their first collaborative public discussion, and a lecture by Parisian art historian Jean Franois Chevrier, who is credited with coining the term Vancouver School when discussing contemporary photography originating in the city.
An exhibition tour with Roy Arden and Dieter Roelstraete takes place on October, 20, 2007 at 1:00 pm at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Roy Arden and guest exhibition curator Dieter Roelstraete of the Antwerp Museum of Contemporary Art will tour Gallery visitors through the exhibition. The tour is free with gallery admission
A panel discussion entitled In Conversation: Realisms, Genre and Photo Art takes place on October, 20, 2007 at 2:30 pm at the Saturna Theatre in the Hotel Vancouver. Moderator Nancy Tousley joins Roy Arden, Mark Lewis, Jeff Wall, Ian Wallace and Dieter Roelstraete for a conversation about contemporary photo practices, addressing the evolution of the photo-tableau from the conceptual art of the 1970s, new realisms and the re-engagement of genre. The panel will consider the topics in the context of the upcoming Gallery exhibitions featuring Roy Arden and Mark Lewis. Additionally, a public lecture by Jean Franois Chevrier takes place on October, 20, 2007 at 7:00 pm, also at the Saturna Theatre in the Hotel Vancouver. Jean Franois Chevrier examines the place of photographyand by extension modern and contemporary artin the arts and the media. An art historian, art critic and curator, Chevrier is a lecturer in the History of Contemporary Art at the cole nationale suprieure des beaux-arts.
