After the Flood and Urban Resilience: makeCalgary International Symposium

Resilience is the ability for a system to recover quickly from unexpected change or misfortune. In the design of resilient communities the challenge is to maintain liveable conditions in the face of natural disasters and severe weather events. In the wake of the June 2013 floods, the time has come to take a closer look at how to make Alberta’s communities more resilient.

On Friday, October 18, 2013, the University of Calgary is hosting a one-day symposium on Urban Resilience. Co-organized by the Faculty of Environmental Design and the Institute for Public Health, this event brings together a group of international thought leaders in the area of disaster recovery, flood design, and resiliency theory to provide guidance and insight to local and regional professionals and municipalities.

Join us for a stimulating day of thought provoking presentations and in-depth workshops geared to a professional audience of planners, architects, public health professionals, government officials, and the development industry.

Symposium participants include Stephen Cassell, Principal of Architecture Research Office, a New York-based firm practicing architecture and urbanism; Thomas Dallessio, Project Manager at the Center for Resilient Design at the New Jersey Institute of Technology; Christy Dolan, Project Manager at AECOM (San Francisco) with 20+ years of recovery planning work throughout the United States; Dr. David LaPlante, developmental psychologist and current research associate at McGill University’s Douglas Institute Research Centre; James Russell, architecture critic for Bloomberg News in New York and a former editor at Architectural Record magazine; Dr. Michael Trew, Alberta’s first Chief Mental Health Officer; and Donald Watson, architect, urban designer, planner, and Visiting Professor and Chair of the Yale University Master of Environmental Design Program.

Registration for the 2013 makeCalgary International Symposium will be available online starting Wednesday, September 18, 2013.
