A two-part symposium is taking place on June 29, 2005 on the subject of a Design Review Panel for Toronto. The event is organized by the City of Toronto in association with the Canadian Urban Institute, the Toronto Society of Architects and the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects.
The desire to promote higher standards of urban design and better quality urban development is a popular sentiment but hard to achieve. Mayor David Miller has added his voice to the debate, and Toronto has now begun to search for ways to enhance the quality of its public realm. Debates over the following issues will be conducted:
*Does review by a group of peers challenge consultants and developers to produce better quality development?
*Can such a system work in Toronto?
*Is tougher public policy the answer or does a successful public realm also need the support of the public, the development industry and consistent political support?
*What can we learn from the experience of other places?
Part 1 of the symposium is entitled Lessons From Other Places and takes place at the Sutton Place Hotel from 7:30am to 11:30am, and includes a CUI Urban Leadership Breakfast Session. Participants include:
*Larry Beasley, Director of Planning, City of Vancouver
*Joanna Averley, Director of Enabling, CABE Program, United Kingdom
*David Carlson, Boston Civic Design Commission, Boston Redevelopment Authority
*Joe Berridge, Partner, Urban Design Strategies, TWRC
Ticket purchase and registration can be done at www.canurb.com/events/event_list.php?status=12&highlight=1&event_type=3
Part II of the symposium includes a moderated panel debate taking place from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the Isabel Bader Theatre. This part of the program is entitled Toward a Made in Toronto Solution, and is free and open to the public. This critical debate includes international and local design review experts. Speakers from the morning session are included, as are the following local panelists:
Councillor Kyle Rae, City of Toronto
Michael Kirkland, Kirkland Partnership
Brigitte Shim, Shim-Sutcliffe Architects
Alan Vihant, Concord Adex Toronto
