Introducing the first This Lighthouse Matters competition—an initiative dedicated to saving Nova Scotia’s lighthouses. In 2010, the federal Department of Fisheries & Oceans declared almost all of Nova Scotia’s lighthouses as surplus to their operational needs. That means that unless community groups are willing to acquire and maintain them, they are gone!
Lighthouses are more than Nova Scotia’s brand – they are its heritage, they are embedded in its culture. All of these competitors are non-profit community groups working to save their lighthouses. We hope you are inspired by their stories and that you support their projects with your votes and your money!
All lighthouse projects are part of a competition that are voted on by you. Projects with the most votes will go on to win cash prizes. Until July 15, 2015, the public is invited to vote online for their favourite lighthouse. Support your favourite project by voting early and often (one vote per project in a 24-hour period). You can vote once a day, every day, for as many projects as you like. But hurry – you only have until July 15, 2015 to vote for your favourite project!
Also, please consider funding these projects in support of the community groups who are working to save Nova Scotia’s lighthouses! Click the project photo to fund a lighthouse.
