The Artist Project celebrates its 8th year with another exciting show from February 19 to 22, 2015 at the Better Living Centre located at Toronto’s Exhibition Place.
From collectors and curators, to gallerists and designers, visitors can explore and discover works of art from over 250 top contemporary artists from Canada and abroad. This is a unique opportunity to meet and buy art directly from artists at Toronto’s favourite art fair.
A number of special features are on offer. Toronto-based artist Bruno Billio presents a new installation called Rocco (2015) that further explores recurrent themes and techniques visited by the artist throughout his artistic practice. Billio often draws inspiration from the ubiquitous, from the simple yet profound repurposing of everyday objects. The collaboration between Billio and curator Rodrigo Barriuso is deeply marked by a common interest in the representation of personal and collective memory. The installation is composed by 110 individual sculptures spread along a 100-foot wall.
OCAD University’s Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers has partnered with the Artist Project to present Alex Beriault’s sculpture and performance work, Ring, as part of the Career Launchers program. Ring investigates how one shares the experiences of intimacy and distance and how these experiences are dependent on one another. Performances take place on opening night from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, Friday from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.
The World Photography Organization and Sony are celebrating seven years of partnership promoting and celebrating the very best in contemporary photography in the Sony World Photography Gallery. As a special addition for this year, Sony of Canada will be awarding the first-ever Canadian National award – selected from amongst the top Canadian submissions for the international competition. The Canadian winner will be announced on March 18 – in addition to receiving prizes, the winner and two runners-up will have their images exhibited in the 2015 Sony World Photography Awards exhibition at Somerset House in London, UK (April 24-May 10, 2015), and online at www.worldphoto.org.
In the TYPE Artist Competition, artists are invited to submit an original work of art based on the interpretation of the theme TYPE. This theme will explore text-based art and the relationship between art and the use of text/language. All competition entries will be on display in a feature area, and winning submissions will be selected by a panel of judges. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd winners will receive cash prizes. Visitors can also vote in the People’s Choice Award for their favourite entry and be automatically entered to win a $250 towards a work of art and a pair of tickets to the Opening Night Party at Artist Project 2016!
UNTAPPED Emerging Artists is a juried competition that awards new artists an opportunity to participate in a dedicated feature space at a professional-level art fair. This program aims to provide a platform for artists to launch their artwork to a public audience, make connections within the arts industry and gain experience in the contemporary art world. Selected from hundreds of applications, 20 of the country’s best up-and-coming artists are invited to showcase their work for free. Discover new talent and add a rising star to your collection. Visitors to the fair can also vote for their favourite UNTAPPED artist who will win a free booth in 2016!
