Great Places, Saskatoon’s discussion forum on current issues in the built environment, is pleased to announce the first in its series of public lectures for 2012. In partnership with the University of Saskatchewan School of Environment and Sustainability and the City of Saskatoon, Great Places presents Dr. John Robinson, who will deliver a lecture entitled Redefining Green: UBC’s Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability. This FREE public lecture takes place on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 7:30pm at the Frances Morrison Public Library in Saskatoon.

Dr. John Robinson is the Director of UBC’s Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS). He was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for his contributions to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2007. According to Robinson: “CIRS is a place for big ideas that have global impacts. UBC is exploring regenerative sustainability and striving to answer the question: Can human activity actually improve the environment and quality of life?”

The CIRS Building sets a new standard for green building design, achieving “net-positive” effects for the environment. CIRS removes carbon from the atmosphere, powers itself and other buildings with renewable and waste energy, and uses rainwater treated on-site. In effect, CIRS provides a sustainability “living laboratory” for green building design and operation, community engagement and policy development. Dr. Robinson will tell the story of the development of this pioneering facility.

For more information on the CIRS project, please watch for the March 2012 issue of Canadian Architect.

Great Places is a discussion forum that focuses on current issues related to the built environment in Saskatoon as shaped by architecture, urban planning, public art and landscape design. The group brings together visionary design professionals, government officials and citizens to discuss projects, initiatives, and precedents, locally and from abroad.

Please contact Great Places at 306.934.0938 for further information on this event.
