RAIC festival to draw international attention

The RAIC 2006 Festival being held jointly with the Architectural Institute of British Columbia conference June 14-17, 2006 in Vancouver offers a fabulous opportunity to learn the latest about what is happening the profession. The theme this year is Habitat Reloaded – The Power of Architecture.

Peter Davey, former editor of the Architectural Review, presents the keynote address at the Opening Reception and Induction/Retirement Ceremony Wednesday, June 14th.

Shigeru Ban, an accomplished international architect most famous for his innovative work with paper – even using recycled cardboard paper tubes to quickly and efficiently house disaster victims – will speak at the RAIC College of Fellows Convocation and Investiture Thursday, June 15th.

Bruce Kuwabara, FRAIC 2006 RAIC Gold Medal recipient will speak Saturday, June 17th.

Former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson will receive an Honourary RAIC Fellowship and address delegates on the afternoon of Saturday, June 17th.

Furthermore, professional development courses are certain to draw the interest of architects from around the world.

Brundtland 20 years on: the second generation of sustainable buildings by Jacqueline Glass, is scheduled for Thursday, June 15th.

Search for a Soul by Raymond Moriyama, FRAIC, RAIC Gold Medallist (Canadian War Museum) will be held on Thursday, June 15th.

Design Like You Give a Damn by Architecture for Humanity’s Cameron Sinclair will take place on Friday, June 16th.

Studio at Large – Steve Badanes (University of Washington and Jersey Devil Design/Build) will take place on Friday, June 16th.

Presidents’ Gala AIBC and RAIC Presidents will host dinner, and presidents from the American Institute of Architects, National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, The Royal Australian Institute of Architects, and l’Union Internationale des Architectes are scheduled to receive the RAIC Presidents Medal.

The proceedings take place around the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Planning Institute of BC, 2006 World Planners Congress and gatherings for the British Columbia Society of Landscape Architects and Canadian Society of Landscape Architects as well as the World Urban Forum (WUF), an international conference sponsored by UN-HABITAT. In celebration, plans are underway for a Super Saturday on June 17th, which will bring together attendees from all these national conferences.

The RAIC Festival is an annual event that takes place in a different Canadian city each year offering delegates a chance to exchange ideas and attend credited professional development courses, and listen to some of the professions’ most forward thinkers.
