The Faculty of Applied Science at the University of British Columbia is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Ray Cole as the Director of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA), effective July 1, 2006.

A UBC architecture professor since 1977, Cole’s research, teaching and professional activities are focused on issues of environmental responsibility and sustainability in architecture. Cole heads the Environmental Research Group in SALA and operates as an internationally respected consultant and both contributes to and initiates a full range of conferences and programs in which sustainable building practices are explored and defined.

Cole is known for furthering the theory and practice of building environmental assessment and was instrumental in the adaptation of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system to Canada, the creation of the Residential Environmental Assessment Program (REAP) at UBC, and the Green Building Challenge (GBC) process, an initiative to assess the progress in green building practices internationally.

He has been teaching environmental issues in building design at UBC for the past 28 years and has served as chairman of the School of Architecture’s post-professional Graduate Program from 1986-1994 and Acting Director in 1990 and 1996.

Cole is an Honorary Member of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia and currently serves as a director of the Canada Green Building Council. He was an inaugural recipient of the UBC Excellence in Teaching Prize in 1990 recognizing outstanding contributions to teaching and instilling and enthusiasm for learning in students and currently holds the UBC designation, Distinguished University Scholar.

He received his undergraduate degree in civil engineering from City University, London, and a PhD in architectural science from the University of Wales.

Cole will be the inaugural Director of SALA, which was formed in July 2005 by the consolidation of the UBC School of Architecture and the UBC Landscape Architecture Program. The new school includes graduate level professional and post-professional programs in architecture and landscape architecture, together with an undergraduate program in environmental design. The school has a full-time faculty of 26, ten staff and over 300 students.
