The Canada Council for the Arts has announced changes to the Prix de Rome in Architecture, to begin this year. A new Prix de Rome for Emerging Practitioners will be awarded annually to a recent graduate who demonstrates exceptional potential in architectural design. The recipient will have the opportunity to visit a series of selected buildings and to expand his or her professional skills with an internship at an internationally acclaimed architectural firm anywhere in the world. Only one candidate per Canadian school of architecture will be accepted, and the prize has a value of $34,000. The application deadline is October 1. In addition, a new Professional Prix de Rome will encourage the development of artistic excellence in architectural practice. One prize will be awarded annually to a young practitioner of architecture or to a firm that has completed a first building. Recipients are allowed to travel around the world to hone their skills, develop their creative practice and strengthen their presence in international architecture culture. Proposed activities may include visits to outstanding buildings, participation in biennales, conferences, or competitions, with multiple trips permitted over a two-year period. The value of the prize is $50,000 and the application deadline in March 1.
