The Toronto office of Perkins Eastman Black has been selected after two rounds in an international competition to be the planners for the Shanghai International Medical Zone. This 11 square-kilometre parcel in the Pudong district is being cleared for a state-of-the-art medical campus that will include:

-two 500-bed teaching hospitals
-several specialty hospitals and clinics
-one of Shanghai’s leading medical schools, planned for 7,000 students
-a major rehabilitation centre
-a centre for medical research and development
-a large medical equipment manufacturing zone

Perkins Eastman Black’s winning plan presents the northern sector as the site for a large campus that includes the teaching hospitals, medical school, rehabilitation complex, medical research park, and an academic exchange centre. The southern sector is dedicated to the medical equipment, research, and manufacturing zone. The full build-out is projected to be approximately 57 million square feet. A design team drawn from the firm’s Toronto and New York offices collaborated on the plan.
