by Canadian Architect
Taking place at the Direct Energy Centre in Toronto from November 25 to December 5, 2010, the One of a Kind Christmas Show is Canada’s best show and sale of works by over 800 artists, designers and craftspeople. With a proud focus on homegrown talent for an interactive personal shopping experience like no other, the vast selection, on-site perks and endless show features make the show “destination shopping” at its best.
Five shopping neighbourhoods will be set up to make it easier for visitors to navigate by category. These districts include One of a Kind Green, One of a Kind Rising Stars, One of a Kind Fashion District, One of a Kind Flavours, and One of a Kind Visual Art Gallery.
In a quest to showcase some of Canada’s brightest artistic talents, the One of a Kind Show
for the first time offers an inside look at the studios of four artisans who will be participating in this year’s Christmas show in Toronto. Hailing from the east to west coasts of Canada and across various mediums of creation, each artisan shares their inspirations and what “giving handmade” means to them. The artisans are: Katie Barnstaple of Lost Nation, Dinh Ba Nguyen of Dinh Ba Design, Jon Black of JJ’s Wood Creations, and Sa Boothroyd.
The studio visits represent an exciting opportunity for visitors to interact with local artisans, exercise creativity and experience firsthand how one-of-a-kind products are made by hand and with love. At the One of a Kind Studios, daily demonstrations will feature artisans working with a range of medium including clay, wood, textile and glass. An invitation to try one’s hand at the potter’s wheel is designed to make these sessions interactive and fun for all.
First introduced at the 2009 One of a Kind Christmas Show, the popular workshop series will feature One of a Kind artisans instructing in their medium of expertise. This year, the following workshops will be available:
- Plush Monster Workshop with Gabe Thirlwall of Fish on Fridays: Saturday, November 27, 9:00am-10:00am
- Holiday Card Workshop with Carmi Cimicata of Carmi Creations: Sunday, November 28, 9:00am-10:00am
- Furoshiki Fabric Printing with Arounna Khounnoraj of Bookhou: Saturday, December 4, 9:00am-10:00am
Workshop cost is $50, including materials, instruction, show admission, DeSerres shopping bag and light breakfast.
One of a Kind Hall of Fame returns, and the show also features complimentary fashion shows, special guest seminars and a family centre, which provides child care for children aged 2-8.
Ticket prices to the One of a Kind Christmas Show & Sale are $12 ($10 online) for adults, $6.50 for seniors and youth (aged 13-17), and children aged 12 & under get in free.
