Fredericton will host the largest national gathering of architects in 2008 as the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the Architects Association of New Brunswick (AANB) stage the annual national Conference and Festival of Architecture. Steering the Current will be the theme of the festival which runs from June 25-28, 2008.

AANB President and festival co-chair, Gaye Kapkin, MRAIC and Saint John architect says, Members have been active in raising the importance of architecture in New Brunswick and they have attracted interest from the RAIC. The winning ingredients are the St. John River, interesting architecture and Maritime hospitality.

The Festival offers delegates an opportunity to exchange ideas and participate in professional development according to RAIC Executive Director, Jon Hobbs, FRAIC. Hobbs says, The festival presents an opportunity to hear the professions most forward thinkers from Canada and around the world. Exhibitions of architecture, social events and architectural tours of Fredericton will be the highlights at a gathering that draws architects together for a truly international gathering.

AANB Executive Director and event co-chair Karen Chantler added, Every available room at the host hotel (Delta) has been booked and meeting space will be needed in various locations. We anticipate attracting more than 300 delegates with an attendance that will double that figure. This event is a coup for New Brunswick and for Fredericton. It is usually held in larger cities.

The RAIC is a voluntary national association established in 1907 as the voice for architecture and its practice in Canada. Representing more than 3,700 architects, the RAIC provides the national framework for the development and recognition of architectural excellence.

The AANB is the provincial licensing body governing the licensing of architects and the practice of architecture in New Brunswick. As a self-governing body, AANB is dedicated to excellence in the profession of architecture while safeguarding the public and the profession.
