Making a Sustainable City Happen: The Toronto Green Development Standard

July 7, 2006
by Canadian Architect

All are welcome to join Mayor David Miller, Deputy Mayors Joe Pantalone and Sandra Bussin, and members of the Roundtable on the Environment and the Roundtable on a Beautiful City are conducting a special joint meeting on the Toronto Green Development Standard on Monday, July 10, 2006, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at Council Chambers of City Hall, located at 100 Queen Street West in Toronto.

A recent report to both Roundtables, called Making a Sustainable City Happen: The Toronto Green Development Standard 2006, has proposed the adoption of enhanced targets for site and building design that address matters of sustainability. It proposes an integrated set of targets, principles, and practices to guide the development of City-owned facilities and to encourage green development amongst the private sector. The Toronto Green Development Standard is a “made-in-Toronto” approach that was created from a review of City guidelines and targets, private rating systems such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Green Globes, and the experiences of cities from around the world. The Toronto Green Development Standard is to be a voluntary program in the initial year of implementation, while further study and consultation is conducted.

The report is available from the City’s website at: http://www.toronto.ca/environment/greendevelopment.htm

The meeting will hear a short presentation on the Toronto Green Development Standard, and provide an opportunity for deputations. Members of the Roundtables will then be able to provide input on this issue, which will be forwarded to the Policy & Finance Committee and then City Council at their meeting scheduled for July 25-27, 2006.

Deputy Mayor Pantalone, Chair of the Roundtable on the Environment, and Deputy Mayor Bussin, Chair of the Roundtable on a Beautiful City, look forward to hosting this meeting. The input received will ensure that Toronto continues to lead in environmental issues. Please RSVP to Frank Baldassini, Committee Secretary, Roundtable on the Environment, at 416-395-7352 or fbalda@toronto.ca, or Maria Kolominsky, Committee Secretary, Roundtable on a Beautiful City, at 416-392-1147 or mkolomin@toronto.ca. If you would like to make a deputation please notify Frank Baldassini or Maria Kolominsky, as per above.
