This exhibition of modern Canadian design takes place during the first Toronto International Design Festival, and the opening reception takes place from 7:00pm to 10:00pm on Wednesday, January 20, 2010. Please RSVP to attend.
Julie Nicholson and Shaun Moore of MADE have conceived Radiant Dark as a means to explore some of the multifaceted aspects of Canadian design. It has grown into a popular series since its inception in 2008, becoming a recognized, independent forum for the introduction of quality new works, curated and presented by MADE. A continuing goal is to increase the profile of emerging Canadian designers through public engagement with their work.
The 2010 theme of Assets & Values shows the makers of Radiant Dark to be reckoning with material, moral, ideological and aesthetic mores in their design of everyday objects. The recessionary, contemporary moment gives pause for the authentic and the individual evaluation of what constitutes real worth or value.
Thirty-two studios will present 34 new designs through the efforts of 39 individuals working across the disciplines of industrial design, craft, art and architecture in the mediums of wood, metal, textile, ceramic and glass. The studios involved are: AHDI / Jill Allan / 608 Design/ Lubo Brezina / Shana Anderson / Soon Cho / Kerry Croghan / Brothers Dressler / Jennifer Graham / Grant Heaps / Bev Hisey / Yvonne Ip / Jessica Johnston / Kelly Palmer and Melanie Zanker / Kristen Lim-Tung / Christine Lieu / Eric Mathew / Claire Madill / Erin McCutcheon / Laura McKibbon / Katherine Morley / Propellor Design / Lucy Roussel / Tamara Rushlow / Rollout Custom Wallpaper / OrestTataryn / Rob Southcott / Tsunami Glassworks / Annie Tung / Brad Turner / Anneke van Bommel / Kathryn Walter.
MADE is committed to innovative design made on a small scale in Canada to the highest quality. It is their mission to showcase and make available inspired, functional objects through a compelling selection of current Candian design.
Radiant Dark is free and open to the public, and exhibition hours are: Thursday to Saturday, January 21-23 from 11:00am to 7:00pm, and Sunday, January 24 from 11:00am to 6:00pm. On Sunday January 24 at 12 noon, a “Walk & Talk” involves eight designers speaking about their work while giving an informal tour of the exhibition. Venue details will be announced soon.
