MADE presents Industrial Bling

July 26, 2009
by Canadian Architect

The opening reception for this new installation by Marcia Huyer and Robert Hengeveld takes place on Thursday, August 6, 2009 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at MADE, located at 867 Dundas Street West in Toronto. The exhibition continues to Saturday, September 19, 2009.

Black rubber, chrome rims, the sparkle of 1970s metallic yellow, and a whole lot of hot air would

be one way to sum up the latest collaborative efforts of artists Marcia Huyer and Robert Hengeveld. Industrial Bling is a melding of the two artist’s independent practices.

Marcia has been taming inflated fabric sculptures to redefine spaces, challenge expectations and

encourage the viewer to experience the architectural space in a new way. Hengeveld is an

installation and multi-media artist whose work manipulates our notion of an authentic reality.

These differing practices have resulted in an object that is curious and fantastical yet grounded in

the familiar. Both artists currently live and work in Toronto.

In 2006, Huyer received her MFA at the University of Victoria and studied sculpture at the Ontario

College of Art and Design (1999). She will be participating in this year’s Nuit Blanche. In 2008, she exhibited work at Inter Access Electronic Media Arts Centre and with Ecotecture Canada, both

in Toronto. In 2007, she exhibited at the ODD Gallery, Dawson City, Yukon; The Art Gallery of

Greater Victoria, Victoria, BC and was a part of CAFKA, Kitchener, ON.

Hengeveld completed his MFA at the University of Victoria in 2005 and received an AOCAD from

the Ontario College of Art and Design. He continues to exhibit his work across Canada and

internationally. He recently received grants from both the Ontario Arts Council and the Toronto

Arts Council. Some of his recent and upcoming exhibitions include It’s One Louder at the Power Plant; Flicker’n Hum during Luminato; Veracity at CAFKA and exhibitions at Interaccess Artist Run Centre and Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art Projects.
