In the spring of 2014, Bigwin Island Golf Club invited six Canadian architectural firms to develop plans for 50 cabins to be built on the golf course. In October of 2014, these teams met to present their designs and MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects was selected to provide architectural design services for the project.

The other teams invited to participate in this competition were: Superkül (Toronto), Taylor_Smyth Architects (Toronto), Patkau Architects (Vancouver), MU Architecture (Montreal), and Altius Architecture, Inc (Toronto) and of course, MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects (Halifax).

“We are extremely pleased to have chosen MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects to lead the Bigwin project and look forward to the next phase of this development. We truly appreciate the time, dedication and passion that was put into all the design proposals we received and extend our congratulations to all the firms that participated,” said Jack Wadsworth, President and Founder, Bigwin Island.

According to Brian MacKayLyons, founding partner of MacKayLyons Sweetapple Architects, “We went hard at this competition because of the strong sense of place in Muskoka and the meaningfulness of Bigwin Island to the client. Good architecture is possible in direct proportion to the level of ambition of the client.”

Bigwin Island is an exclusive waterfront vacation home and golf-course community located on Lake of Bays in Muskoka, the heart of Ontario cottage country. Halifax-based firm MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects was founded by Brian MacKay-Lyons in 1985 as Brian MacKay-Lyons Architecture Urban Design. In 2005, Talbot Sweetapple joined the practice to create the partnership of MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects. The firm works locally and internationally on cultural, academic and residential projects, providing full architectural and interior design services.
