Let’s Talk About…Community: Panel Discussion and Film Screening in Calgary

Calgarians and architects in Calgary for the annual RAIC Festival on June 4, 2015 are in for a special treat, as they are invited to join the d.talks discussion on the notion of community as it relates to place, materiality and the public. What alters with production as we source what’s in close proximity? The event is a double feature: a panel discussion followed by a film screening taking place from 6:00pm to 10:00pm on Thursday, June 4th at the Royal Canadian Legion No. 1, located at 116 – 7th Ave SE in Calgary.

The panel discussion features artists Yvonne Mullock and Peter von Tiesenhausen, who will join architect Richard Kroeker in a panel discussion and question period. Kroeker, finding inspiration from early First Nations designs and employing an innovative use of materials, and von Tiesenhausen, whose attention to the land shepherded in a cultural centre for a small town in Northern Alberta—both draw from the immediate surroundings with built form. Mullock’s work with Islanders off the coast of Newfoundland results in new quilts for the Fogo Island Inn that are rooted in local techniques and material memory. The panel discussion will be moderated by Kate Thompson of Calgary Municipal Land Corporation.

Following the panel discussion and question-and-answer session, the documentary Strange & Familiar will be screened, revealing the work of social entrepreneur Zita Cobb and architect Todd Saunders as Fogo Island transforms a dwindling cod-fishing dependency into an artistic and tourism destination. The community was engaged on many fronts and social entrepreneurship has fostered new businesses on the island today. Norway-based architect Todd Saunders will be available to answer questions following the screening.

The event is presented in three parts: panel discussion from 6:00pm-7:30pm, followed by a community supper from 7:30pm-8:45pm, and finally, the film screening from 8:45pm-10:00pm.

Tickets are $12 for RAIC members and adults (panel and film…either or both); $5 for students. A ticket to the community supper is $20; seating is limited. To purchase tickets, please visit https://aboutcommunity.eventbrite.ca
