Last call: New Scandinavian Design at the Design Exchange

As part of the National Post Design Exchange Speaker Series, five world-renowned Nordic designers will come to Toronto to participate in a lecture and panel discussion on Tuesday, May 3.

Riding a wave of major international interest and acclaim, a young generation of Scandinavians is producing groundbreaking new designs with a pace and ingenuity that rivals that of Scandinavia’s golden age during the 1950s. Crafting pioneering designs encompassing sensuous textiles, poetic consumer products, luminous glassware, savvy furniture, and soaring architecture, Scandinavians rethink tradition by effortlessly mixing timeless concerns with contemporary conceptual notes. To explore this dynamic and internationally influential design culture (think IKEA, H&M, Nokia, Volvo, Absolut, Bang & Olufsen to start), award-winning creative director Raul Cabra and Metropolitan Home magazine editor and writer Katherine E. Nelson will host a travelling lecture series that allows North Americans inside access to the thinking behind contemporary Nordic products. Delving deeply into this important movement in global design, the presentation will debate the hot cultural issues highlighted in the celebrated book New Scandinavian Design (Chronicle Books, 2005), a new and authoritative survey co-edited by Cabra and Nelson.

For this compelling traveling lecture series, Cabra and Nelson have assembled an extraordinary group of five designers, one from each Nordic country. Spanning a wide range of design disciplines, this articulate and distinguished panel includes Dane Ole Jensen, a designer and ceramicist for Royal Copenhagen, architect and furniture designer Kivi Sotamaa from Finland, Icelander and product designer Hrafnkell Birgisson, furniture designer Monica Frster from Sweden, and Norwegian Cathrine Maske, a glass designer. The group will offer individual presentations featuring sneak peeks of new work. A 45-minute panel discussion follows that pinpoints critical cultural issues and highlights the latest design trends from Scandinavia.

The event will take place on Tuesday, May 3 on the Trading Floor of Toronto’s Design Exchange. Doors open at 6:00pm, and the panel begins at 6:30pm. Tickets are $25.00 ($20.00 for DX Members). To order tickets, call the DX Box Office at (416) 216-2160. Tickets can also be purchased that night. The series will premiere in New York City on May 2nd and also travel to San Francisco on May 5th.

The program is co-sponsored by the Nordic Embassies in Canada: the Embassy of Denmark, the Embassy of Finland, the Embassy of Iceland, the Royal Norwegian Embassy and the Embassy of Sweden.
