Organized by the Centre international d’art contemporain de Montral (CIAC), the 5th edition of La Biennale de Montral will be held from May 10th to July 8th, 2007 with the theme Crack the Sky.

A selection of recent but previously unseen works produced by both internationally known and emerging artists will be presented. A total of some 50 artists from Canada and numerous other countries including South Africa, Brazil, China, Denmark, the United States, Peru, the United Kingdom and Uruguay will be featured.

Some 50,000 square feet of exhibitions with varying themes will be located at six venues across Montreal: cole Bourget, Galerie de l’UQAM, Liane & Danny Taran Gallery at the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts, Parisian Laundry, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Cinmathque qubcoise. Featured artworks include painting, sculpture, video, photography, film and mixed media.

The office of commissioner for the 5th edition of La Biennale de Montral will be held by Wayne Baerwaldt, an independent curator and author who is also curator of the Illingworth Kerr Gallery at the Alberta College of Art & Design. To bring to light the most stimulating contributions of contemporary art, Baerwaldt has focused on the various aesthetic and socio-political issues that characterize our era, one that is rich in paradox. Whether inspired by tribal art, documents, artifacts or 21st-century curio cabinets, guest artists have revealed an interest for, among other subjects, the overlapping of collective and individual identities, the shifting of national borders and the impact of religious beliefs.

Drawing from the large range of mediums available today, Crack the Sky artists will use various tools including among others, sociology, anthropology and history to interpret today’s realities and to translate them into aesthetic forms. The result will be original representation systems and artworks that will both provoke and inspire.

In addition to art exhibits, La Biennale de Montral 2007 will offer a musical and performing arts program produced in collaboration with local producers as well as an extremely rich and varied educational component planned with its various partners. Educational activities will target teaching institutions as well as the general population. La Biennale is organizing a contest entitled Become an Art Critic, setting up workshops in the schools of the Commission scolaire de Montral, guided tours of art exhibits, La ville dans ma lentille with the group Oxy-jeunes, and Oser la cration contemporaine, in cooperation with the Festival Trans-Amriques.

Building on his mission to increase contemporary art awareness among the public at large, Claude Gosselin, founder and artistic director of the CIAC, has invited actor, writer and program host Raymond Cloutier to be the spokesperson for the 5th edition of La Biennale de Montral.

Through daring, clever and quality programming and activities, La Biennale de Montral 2007 will bring to light the predominance of art, its vitality and its ability to generate debate and new ideas.
