Kirkor Architects & Planners in association with Guangzhou Pearl River Architectural Institute was one of two finalists in the final phase of the international competition for the 1,200,000 sq. ft. cultural operatic theatre and commercial retail complex. Kirkor’s design strategy was to use the building forms and materials as a reflection of the vibrancy and brilliance of Shenzhen’s spectacular economic and social growth. The centrepiece of the complex is the crystalline iconic form of the Opera House completely clad in an indigenous onyx skin which radiates a warm golden hue at night.
