Modular carpet-tile manufacturer Interface has stepped up to become a sponsor of the 30×30 Nature Challenge. Spearheaded by the David Suzuki Foundation (DSF), the Challenge is inviting Canadians to commit to actively spend 30 minutes a day outside in nature for 30 days during the month of May. The concept of the program is to instill a healthy habit among the population, especially focusing on businesses and industry to endorse and encourage their employees to take this daily break. In addition to enlisting its own 56 Canadian employees to participate, Interface also is underwriting the “tool kit” that will be available to help guide other employers nationwide on enacting the 30×30 Challenge in their workplace.
“It is well documented that the health and well being of workers impacts their productivity and job satisfaction,” said Nadine Gudz, director of sustainability strategy, who is leading the 30×30 drive at Interface and sees this fitting hand in glove with Interface’s commitment to creating healthier workplaces. “Everything that this initiative represents is aligned with our own practices and policies, so it was a natural for us to support.”
Interface has long been a zealous advocate and global leader of sustainability. In 1994, it issued a Mission Zero® promise to get off oil and ultimately eliminate any negative impact the company may have on the environment by 2020. For a manufacturer of modular carpet tile in an industry that relies upon petroleum-based ingredients, it was a gutsy and ambitious pledge. But as the company progressively nears its goal, it has been developing innovative products that utilize some very unexpected alternative materials – salvaged fishing nets and industrial sludge, among them. What’s more, for design inspiration, Interface has turned to biophilia – the fact that humans are instinctively wired to connect with the natural world. A number of its latest flooring collections incorporate textures, colours and patterns that reference elements of the great outdoors and natural systems in order to contribute to biophilic design and foster a positive human/nature connection.
