Here Be Monsters: The Map & The Territory

This fall 2012, The Eric Arthur Gallery will showcase the exemplary work of graduate students from the University of Toronto’s John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design in its second annual exhibition Here Be Monsters: The Map & The Territory.

Here Be Monsters celebrates studio and thesis work from the 2011/2012 academic year. Responding to urban design challenges that are increasingly complex and global in nature, these projects from students at U of T explore creative and sustainable ways to design and inhabit the built environment.

The exhibition is presented in two parts, echoing the structure of the Daniels Faculty’s degree programs. Part one, The Map, features studio work from all years and all disciplines. With an emphasis on the exploratory nature of the design process, it is made up of a diverse collection of plans, sections, perspectives, diagrams, and models: all exercises in mapping. The navigational skills gained through studio work lead to part two, The Territory, which will showcase the past year’s most innovative and creative thesis projects.

The launch of The Annual: Architecture, Landscape & Design for 2011/2012 will coincide with the opening of the thesis exhibition. Published each year by the Graduate Architecture Landscape Design Students Union (GALSU), this book showcases the Master’s design theses of the Daniels Faculty’s 2012 graduating class.

Together, these shows represent the culmination of Daniels graduate students’ explorations and critical engagement with contemporary design practice.

The opening takes place on September 10, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Eric Arthur Gallery, located at 230 College Street in Toronto. The exhibition committee is comprised of Catherine Dean, Francesca Joyce, Regina Park and Doug Robb. The Map (Daniels studio exhibition) runs from September 10 to October 10, and The Territory (Daniels thesis exhibition) runs from October 15 to November 12.

Gallery hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm, and Saturday from 12:00 noon to 5:00pm. Admission is free.
