Ernesto Morales: Hospital of the Future

October 26, 2011
by Canadian Architect

As part of the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design’s Building, Ecology, Science and Technology Lecture Series at the University of Toronto, Ernesto Morales speaks on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

Ernesto Morales is a consultant and a researcher at the Centre de recherche de L’Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal (CRIUGM). With a bachelor’s degree in architecture and a master’s degree in industrial design, he won the Excellency grant from the government of Mexico to study his Ph.D. at the Univesité de Montréal. He recently finished his second postdoctorate in Environmental Gerontology (funded by the CIHR) at the CRIUGM. He is interested in creating evidence-based design proposals of working or living areas (clinical or domestic) offering healthier environments with a special emphasis on persons with disabilities (permanent or temporary-cognitive, motor, visual or aural).

In this lecture, Ernesto will talk about the project – “The Hospital of the Future” – and healing environments. The Research Centre for Innovation in Health Care in Utrecht, The Netherlands, recently invited him to participate in this project. Stress, noise, infections and lack of sleep are some of the most common features in a hospital that do not help in the healing process of a patient. A healing environment is defined as a place where the interaction between the patient and the staff within the physical environment produces positive health outcomes. He will present the theoretical framework used in the project, along with an evidence-based design proposal for a “single-patient room.”

The lecture takes place in Room 103 of the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, located at 230 College Street in Toronto. Admission is free, but seating is limited to a first-come first-served basis. The event is followed by a reception with snacks and refreshments. Attendance at this lecture earns 2 core learning hours with the Ontario Association of Architects.
