Designing the Architect Symposium

Ryerson University’s Master of Architecture Class of 2016 invites architects, industry professionals, academics and students to a symposium titled “Designing the Architect: Reshaping Architectural Pedagogy in the Information Age,” engaging in discussions on architectural education in the current epoch.

Grounded in the remarkable legacy of creating architecture, the role of the architect and student is rapidly changing. In this context, our notion of “architect” in today’s world must likewise evolve, right from the outset of learning. Framed around three areas of focus, this symposium will assess architectural education through the lenses of interdisciplinary practice, the digital and sustainable issues.

In response to the paradigm shift, how will the learning environment establish lateral connections, advancing the student in other areas of knowledge? How will education embrace the digital, its new methods of representation as well as enhanced capacity of material design and fabrication? Finally, how does this extend beyond the current and into the future of education, design and practice of architecture?

Guest speakers include Michelle Addington of the Yale University School of Architecture; David Gloster, Director of Education at the Royal Institute of British Architects; David Covo, Associate Professor and Associate Director of the Professional Program at McGill University; Monica Ponce de Leon, Founding Partner of MPdL Studio; and George Baird, Past Dean of the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto.

The symposium takes place from 6:30pm to 10:00pm on January 26, 2015 at the Bram & Bluma Appel Salon, located on the second floor of the Toronto Reference Library at 789 Yonge Street.
