The Power Plant presents a lecture by Franklin Sirmans, Terri and Michael Smooke Department Head and Curator of Contemporary Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the artistic director of Prospect.3 New Orleans. This lecture will take place at 7:00 on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 in the Studio Theatre at Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. Tickets are $12, and free for all members of The Power Plant.

From 2006 to 2010, Sirmans was the Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at The Menil Collection in Houston, TX, where he organized ten exhibitions including NeoHooDoo: Art for a Forgotten Faith (2008-2009), Maurizio Cattelan: Is There Life Before Death (2010), Steve Wolfe: On Paper (2010), and Vija Celmins: Television and Disaster, 1964–66 (2010 – 2011). The latter two travelled to LACMA , where Sirmans has also organized Color and Form and Robert Therrien and co-organized the exhibition Human Nature: Contemporary Art from the Collection. Sirmans was the 2007 recipient of the David C. Driskell Prize awarded by the High Museum of Art, Atlanta. He has written essays for several exhibition catalogues and articles and reviews in publications such as The New York Times, Time Out New York, Essence, Parkett and Grand Street.

The gallery presents Franklin Sirmans as a part of its ongoing International Lecture Series, which brings world-renowned artists, curators and leaders in the arts to Toronto. This is an exciting opportunity to meet a charismatic curator who is widely considered to be at the forefront of curatorial practice. Sirmans will talk about his early work as an independent curator, leading to his work in an institution and in the context of an institutional biennial exhibition, Prospect.3.
