BC’s Community Charter is in effect as of January 1, 2004. Among its many provisions, the Charter gives municipalities broad powers to regulate activities within their own communities. The Charter also introduces the concept of concurrent regulatory authority in five areas, including building standards, where local governments and the Province share an interest in regulating activities.
