Cannon Design Architects of Vancouver on Friday received the distinguished Facilities of Merit Award at the Athletic Business Showcase in San Diego, California for their work on the Richmond Olympic Oval.
The architectural showcase is an annual event that recognizes architects for their achievement in architectural design for athletic and recreational facilities around the world. The Richmond Olympic Oval was chosen from 87 selected projects and is said to have set the benchmark in design and functionality. The award recognizes the project’s innovative design and commitment to legacy.
“We are honoured to be recognized by Athletic Business to receive this coveted award and to join a list of recipients that includes many accomplished architects,” said Bob Johnston, Principal and National Sport Practice Leader, Cannon Design from San Diego where he accepted the award in the company of Larry Podhora, Project Architect for the Richmond Olympic Oval and Greg Scott from the City of Richmond. “Designing the Richmond Olympic Oval was a unique opportunity to create a multipurpose sports and recreation facility that was used not only to host the Olympic Winter Games but that will also serve as a lasting legacy the people of British Columbia can use for years to come.”
The Richmond Olympic Oval, which hosted long-track speed-skating events during the Olympic Games, has been transformed into a community fitness and recreation centre and will also be host to a wide range of international sporting events. The one-of-a-kind structure boasts a series of feathered roof spans constructed from one million feet of pine-beetle-kill wood boards from the forests of British Columbia, which allowed the beautiful arches to be produced at substantial cost savings. The interior mitigates the facility’s large scale, and reveals a myriad of functions within while maintaining continuity with the exterior.
Cannon Design has consistently received accolades for their outstanding work on the Richmond Olympic Oval. Utilizing their broad programming experience from a wealth of international, community and recreational sport and building projects to address the needs of the local community, they were able to realize the facility’s full potential.
