The Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) invites submissions from those interested in speaking and participating in panel discussions or facilitating interactive workshops at the 2012 AIBC Annual Conference, which takes place from May 9-12, 2012 in Vancouver. The AIBC seeks presenters who are experts in their field and familiar with presenting their area of expertise.

The AIBC Annual Conference brings together architects, intern architects, builders, engineers, interior designers and other members of the design community public to learn about new industry trends, technological advances and best practices. This annual gathering, the largest of its kind in British Columbia, is also a chance to network, socialize and celebrate the innovative, impactful work of practitioners and theorists. The conference includes keynote presentations, seminars, workshops and panel discussions. The last five years have seen a continued growth in attendance ranging from 400 – 700 attendees.

The 2012 AIBC Annual Conference’s theme – Elevation: Reaching Higher Ground – represents more than just architecture’s physical impact on the built environment. It reflects the importance of setting new standards for architectural excellence, raising the level and quality of dialogue around the profession and, in doing so, growing the level of public awareness and connectedness with architecture. Like the theme, this conference will look beyond typical practice and respond to the growing changes in the way architectural services are being delivered. Whether a result of (or response to) environmental stresses, economic impacts and social changes, the profession is on the cusp of significant, indelible change.

As such, this year’s conference program will be eye-opening and thought-provoking. Session topics will span four distinct streams: Art; Business; Technology; and expansion on the “Elevation: Reaching Higher Ground” theme. The goal is to inform, excite, challenge and inspire.

The following criteria will be examined when reviewing submissions and selecting applications:

  • content that is educational in nature, relevant to the profession of architecture, clear and concise
  • relationship to conference theme
  • connection to the AIBC’s strategic and educational initiatives, including such aspects as design, practice, innovation, excellence, environment, communities, diversity, technology, and business
  • relevance to architecture in British Columbia
  • speaker qualifications and experience

The deadline for the call for papers has been extended to December 15, 2011. It is anticipated that the AIBC Annual Conference Professional Development Committee will consider applications and make selections by mid-January 2012.
