Call for Captions: Mellon Project on Architecture and Photography

March 8, 2015
by Canadian Architect

The Canadian Centre for Architecture is interested in how captions influence the way we read photographs. Captions can cloud and clarify. They can attack an image or stand apart, apparently neutral and transparent. They might seem tranquil, but can be fraught. They are definitely relational things. They involve an interaction, and the CCA thinks the best way to continue to think about captions is to invite you to join a conversation with them.

They are issuing an invitation to send them a letter about your idea on captioning, as well as a caption you have made. Your caption could be text, image, sound or video. If your thinking on this is a good fit with theirs, then they would be delighted to have you join them at the CCA to work on this project together. Many architects, photographers, scholars, artists and writers come to the CCA’s research museum and they are keen to continue this kind of dialogue and collaborative work with this project.

Communicate your interest to the CCA by April 13, 2015. To apply, please send them your letter about captioning (maximum 1000 words), your captions (1-5), and your CV via their application portal. They cannot accept materials by fax, mail or e-mail. This call is open to all applicants regardless of citizenship, and they welcome submissions in English or French.

Sixteen submissions will be chosen by May 4, 2015. If selected, you will visit Montreal for 2-5 days between May 18-June 20, 2015 to explore the CCA and their collection, and to develop your idea into a detailed project proposal. They will cover travel and accommodations.

The deadline for the submission of revised project proposals is July 20, 2015. These can take any form including text, photography, moving images, installation, exhibition, publication and other media. Through a blind peer-review, eight of the 16 participants will be chosen to be Mellon Researchers and to develop their proposals in collaboration with the CCA. Each Mellon Researcher will receive a grant to support the research and production of their project from October 2015 to February 2017. Researchers must attend a two-day workshop and spend at least two more weeks at the CCA over two further research visits.
