Caiazza Memorial Challenge: 2005 Promosedia International Chair Design Competition

The aim of the competition is to stimulate innovative creative ideas for chair design which must also be technically feasible. Applicants are invited to express originality and innovation in identifying the use and function of the chair, giving due consideration to ergonomics, choice of materials, and the requirements of mass production.

Entries should present ideas for INDOOR CHAIRS for residential and contract use, making significant use of wood. Designs for chaises longues, divans, stools and pouffes are not eligible.

All graphic material must be burned onto a CD. Preferred image format is JPEG of 20cm square dimensions, with a minimum 300dpi of high resolution and a 72 dpi of low resolution. The project must be contained in a maximum of four tables. The presentation must also contain a scale drawing and a short description of the design. Also required is an A3 42 x 29.7 cm paper printout of the design tables. Failure to comply with even one of the above requirements will result in the exclusion of the entry. Please ensure entries are anonymous.

The first prize is 3,500 EUR, and the prototype of the winning entry will be made and exhibited during Promosedia 2005 International Chair Exhibition from September 8-11, 2005, along with design prototypes of the "By Invitation" section. The winning design will also be featured in a special catalogue.

The competition is open to designers under the age of 40 as of September 8, 2005 – architects, designers and students duly enrolled in tertiary design institutes and faculties of architecture.

Deadline for submission is 6pm Friday, May 6, 2005. Only ONE design per person is accepted, and no entry fee is required. Please send all material to:

Where delivery is by mail or carrier, the postmark of consignment note will be considered proof of compliance. In any case, documentation must arrive within 7 days of the closing date. All entries arriving after these dates will be disqualified.
