Dayna Ayers Baumeister, PhD, will facilitate a workshop at the Design Exchange on Tuesday, November 8 on the topic of Biomimicry and the Cold, in conjunction with the Design Exchange’s Design for the Cold exhibit.

Through interactive exercises, lively discussions, and hands-on learning, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the “conscious emulation of nature’s genius” and practice being biomimics. Dayna will present design challenges and solutions applicable to winter environments using the tools of biomimicry. This workshop is ideal for those interested in applying the principles and practice of biomimicry to their own work.

Dayna has worked in the field of Biomimicry for the last seven years as an educator, researcher, and design consultant. Through her many dynamic workshops, presentations, seminars, and exhibits, Dayna confronts the challenge of finding a means to meet the needs of humans while ensuring our well being and long-term sustainability within the context of natural systems.

Based in Montana, Dayna Ayers Baumeister is co-founder of the Biomimicry Guild which helps communities and companies consult nature to create products, processes, and policies that are well-adapted to sustaining life on earth over the long haul.

Participants are encouraged to visit Design for the Cold, an exhibition of design and health sciences research and artist works that runs from November 2-25 at the Design Exchange, and to sign up for a follow-up discussion group led by Norbert Hoeller, Principal of the Sustainable Innovation Network on November 10, 2005 from 2-5pm. All participants will also receive the DX’s forthcoming Exchange publication on Universal Design with their registration. Registration is limited to 25 participants.

The event takes place at Toronto’s Design Exchange from 9:00am to 12:00pm noon on Tuesday, November 8, 2005. The fee is $75 or $50 for DX members. For more information, please contact Paola Poletto at 416.216.2155 or paola@dx.org, or register by calling 416.216.2126 or daniela@dx.org.
