April 26, 2007 is the deadline for expressions of interest for this open international competition for a ew sustainable community for 21st-century London in the heart of the Thames Gateway. A riverside location with exceptional potential and qualities where people will feel proud to live and work, Barking Riverside promises to become one of the most important and inspiring new communities in London. It strives to be home to more than 26,000 people, enjoying new schools, shopping, parkland, access to the river, new improved transport connections and a location close to the vibrant Barking town centre. Barking Riverside aspires to deliver an exciting mix of high-density design offering a range of tenures and affordable homes. Central to the development of Barking Riverside are generous community facilities, ranging from local shops to a wide variety of health-care facilities and leisure spaces, as well as three brand new schools. All this will be set in a high-quality environment of parkland and open space, designed for the enjoyment and benefit of the whole community. Access to the riverside is a priority, opening up 2 kilometres of riverfront to walkways and cycle paths.
The competition aims to create a new community where people want to settle and stay because they feel proud of where they live. The site has exceptional potential and its qualities offer an excellent starting point for the creation of a new, inspiring urban district. The competition will select two independent design teams to be appointed to work with Barking Riverside Ltd. on the first two (Eastern and Western) of four stages of sub-framework plans, set within the context of the approved master plan and the Urban Design Guidelines, which will total the first 4,000 homes to be built on the site.
