Art Toronto returns this fall with yet another stunning exhibition of modern and contemporary art from around the world. From October 26th to 29th at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, collectors, curators and art enthusiasts will converge on Toronto to experience the latest edition of Canada’s premiere art fair. The three-day fair will showcase exhibits by more than a hundred leading and emerging galleries from 23 countries, with over 20,000 collectors, curators, and art enthusiasts expected to attend over the course of the weekend.
Other highlights of the fair include solo exhibitions, installations, and curated projects by renowned artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, and Ed Pien, as well as the fair’s special curatorial project Focus ASIA: Beyond Geography. The Opening Night Preview to benefit the Art Gallery of Ontario will launch the fair on Thursday October 25th and feature a performance by Tibi Tibi Neuspiel and Geoffrey Pugen as well as the unveiling of the BMW art car.
Focus ASIA is a continuation of an annual initiative, which seeks to highlight influential topics in contemporary art. This year’s presentation will feature both established and emerging galleries from the world’s largest continent in a section devoted specifically to contemporary Asian art. This special section of the fair will be curated by the well-regarded managing editor of Yishu Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art, Zheng Shengtian and independent curator Katherine Don. The title of the exhibition is Beyond Geography. In it curators Shengtian and Don present a thought-provoking selection of installations and video work that illustrates the hybrid expressions of multiple cultures. While some pieces appear to have no discernible Asian cultural references, the exhibition aims to open a dialogue about what kind of art audiences expect to be produced by artists who happen to have lived in Asia or are of Asian descent. It asks us to examine, reconsider, and reflect on our understandings of Asia itself.
The Opening Night Preview, including the Special Collectors’ Preview, is the celebratory launch of Art Toronto and a benefit for the Art Gallery of Ontario. The event provides guests with the opportunity to preview and purchase works of art before the fair opens to the public and to meet many of the artists whose work is featured at the Fair. Guests will enjoy a new performance piece by Tibi Tibi Neuspiel and Geoffrey Pugen entitled The Tie Break: Hurdles, while socializing over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.
