The Daniels Faculty is pleased to welcome architect Burton Hamfelt — principal of Burton Hamfelt Architectuur Stedebouw Prototypes (BHASP) in Amsterdam — to kick off their 2012-2013 bulthaup lectures on Tuesday, October 9, 2012.

Hamfelt’s lecture will explore the wide range of projects he has done around the world — from his firm’s award-winning development plan for the Circus, Bodem, and Gasfabrik area in the Dutch city of Groningen, to the regeneration of Tarling Estate, a four-storey residential block in East London. The core of his lecture will focus on a number of inner-city mixed-use housing projects, which he views as new forms of urban infrastructure, as well as school buildings and educational landscapes that not only address the needs of students but also the contemporary cities that they are located in. Hamfelt’s projects explore how to better integrate often isolated housing, commercial blocks and educational centres into their urban environments.

Before establishing BHASP in 2008, Hamfelt was co-founder and director of the critically acclaimed and award-winning international bureau, S333 Architecture + Urbanism, Amsterdam/London. Prior to this, he worked with Xaveer de Geyter Architects in Antwerp, Neutelings Riedijk Architects in Rotterdam, and Bruce Mau Design in Toronto.

Hamfelt is a distinguished graduate of the Daniels architecture program. Over the last 18 years, he has taught at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam, the Architectural Association in London and the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam. He has also been a member of the design and architecture advisory board for the City of Amsterdam, and is currently a member of the advisory committee for the International Projects for the Dutch Architecture Fund as well as the World Smart Capital Steering Committee.

This year, Hamfelt is conducting an advanced option studio as a visiting faculty member at Daniels, entitled “Free State of Toronto,” in which he is challenging students to create more open, innovative models for urban development by better utilizing local resources and engaging residents.

The lecture takes place from 6:30pm to 8:00pm on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 in Room 103, 230 College Street. For more information, please visit http://www.daniels.utoronto.ca/lectures/burton_hamfelt.
