Team Canada has been busily toiling away in the Venetian heat for weeks, setting up their elaborate installation in the Canadian Pavilion at the 2012 Venice Biennale in Architecture.
According to Johanna Hurme of Migrating Landscapes Organizer and co-director of Team Canada’s contribution to this prestigious cultural event: “We are now only days away from the Biennale press days, Canada Pavilion inauguration and the official public opening. It has been an eventful few days and the anticipation is definitely building as the general Biennale grounds are transformed with signage, lighting, ticket booths and the Biennale advertisements seem to increase in numbers throughout the city. At the national pavilions there is a mad dash to the finish, and we and our tools have been popular among the other teams when a little cutting, sanding or BBQing is required.”
The format of Migrating Landscapes – Canada’s official entry to the 2012 Venice Biennale in Architecture, was premised on a national competition in which a national jury selected 18 winners, made up of individuals and teams of young architects and designers. Architectural models have been shipped to Venice and the team has endured the laborious task of building and assembling on site the expansive wooden “landscape” that their models will perch upon.
The 18 winning teams from across Canada are listed by province as follows. British Columbia: 142 Amirali Javidan; 216 Mira Yung + IMu Chan; 160 Olena Chytra + Philipp Dittus + Alana Green + Katy Young; 184 D’Arcy Jones + Amanda Kemeny + Daan Murray + Melani Pigat. Alberta: 239 Tiffany Shaw-Collinge. Saskatchewan: 229 April Hiebert + Brad Pickard + Robyn Robertson + Mark Sin + Victoria Yong-Hing. Manitoba: 220 Jason Hare; 202 Travis Cooke + Jason Kun; 219 Andre Silva + Chris Gilmour + Kory Kaspersion. Ontario: 155 Andrew Batay-Csorba + Jodi Batay-Csorba; 203 Erica Peckoskie + George Simionopoulos; 206 Kfir Gluzberg + Liana Bresler. Quebec: 191 Enrique Enriquez; 212 Felix Tue; 148 Jean-Nicolas Bouchard + Philippe Charest; 158 Anca Matyiku + Chad Connery. Maritimes: 204 Marianna de Cola; 189 Stephen Kopp + Monica Adair + John Leroux + Jessie Croll + Alicia Halas.
