The North American Wood Design Program recognizes innovative wood design in North America, and has honoured MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects (MLSA) with the following awards: the Ron Thom Award was given to the firm for the Ghost Campus, located in Upper Kingsburg, Nova Scotia. This prestigious award is rarely granted and is presented to an architect and a body of work that demonstrates outstanding creative talent and exemplary architectural design. The second award issued to the firm was a Wood Design Honour Award, which recognizes the Cliff House, located on Nova Scotia’s eastern shore. And lastly, a North American Wood Design Citation distinguished the Two Hulls House on Nova Scotia’s south shore.

Additionally, MLSA recently won two prestigious national and international design awards: the Canadian Architect Award of Excellence for the Two Hulls House, and the American Institute of Architects Honor Award for the Shobac Campus. The firm continues to consistently put Nova Scotia architecture on the global map.

The American Institute of Architects Honor Award is the highest award given by the American Institute of Architects for building design. The firm received this prestigious recognition from their peers for the design of the Shobac Campus, a collection of buildings in Upper Kingsburg, Nova Scotia. This is the second time that the firm has received this international award, and the fourth time it has been shortlisted. Very few Canadian architects have received this honour. The awards ceremony will take place in May 2012 at the American Institute of Architects National Convention in Washington, DC.

In December 2011, the Canadian Architect Award of Excellence was bestowed upon the firm for the design of a private residence called the Two Hulls House on the south shore of Nova Scotia. This award is one of the top annual architecture awards given in Canada for building design, and MLSA has received this national award eight times.
