2004 ar+d awards for Emerging Architecture

August 10, 2004
by Canadian Architect

Now in their sixth year, these awards are designed to give any architect under 45 years of age the opportunity to achieve recognition on the international stage. Inaugurated in 1999 by The Architectural Review and d line, the awards are intended to seek out and recognize new talent worldwide. They are supported by the multidisciplinary international consulting engineer Buro Happold and Grohe, a leading supplier of complete water technology solutions. Awards are given for built or manufactured work only, ensuring that winners have passed the test of moving from theory to practice, drawings to reality. This year the distinguished jury is comprised of Mario Cucinella, Bologna, Italy; Kevin Daly of Daly Genik, Los Angeles, USA; Ryue Nishizawa of Kazuyo Sejima Ryue Nishizawa/SANAA, Tokyo, Japan; Gert Wingardh, Gothenburg, Sweden; and Peter Davey, Editor of The Architectural Review. Prizes will be given in several categories to be decided by the jury. Submissions are encouraged in respect of all building types, interiors, urban design, landscape, bridges, temporary structures and manufactured products. Entrants, who must be under 45, may make up to five submissions. Total prize money is 10,000 GBP to be distributed as the jury decides. Award-winners will be invited to a prize-giving ceremony to be held in London on December 2, 2004, and will also be invited to participate in the Spring Lecture Series at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London in 2005. More than 700 entries from 55 countries were received for the award last year, from which four winners were chosen, with three highly commended and 13 commended schemes. This year’s winning and commended projects will be published in a special issue of The Architectural Review in December. The deadline for receipt of entries is September 14, 2004.
